Study: Get Fit by Believing You Can Do It
|It turns out there’s a little more to physical activity than sets and repetitions. According to recent research, fitness isn’t just about physical exercise. To get fit and see real results, you also have to change your mindset, not just your behavior.
A study published in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine suggests that a little positive thinking can actually do wonders for the effectiveness of your workouts. Those who walk into a workout believing they are improving themselves, researchers found, actually end up doing so.
MP’s Take: Of course, this doesn’t mean you can think and believe your way to optimal physical fitness. You actually have to get up and do the work. There will always be days you don’t want to, or days you’re feeling tired and like you’re underperforming. The key is to go into those workouts with the mindset that it’s not going to be that bad, and that you can still get something out of it. Just tell yourself you can do it, even when you feel like you can’t, and then prove to yourself you really can.
